GIZ has been represented in Mongolia since 1991 and established its own office in Ulan Bator in 1998.

Mongolia is one of the world’s most sparsely populated countries. Land-locked, it is characterised by an extreme climate and harsh natural conditions. Almost half the population live in rural areas; some are sedentary whiles others live as nomadic livestock herders.

The Mongolian Government is pursuing a process of economic and political transition from a centralised planned economy to a socially oriented market economy with democratic structures. The peaceful and democratic change is a decisive positive location factor for Mongolia.

The major challenges facing the country include the need to ensure the sustainable use of natural resources and energy sources and the imperatives of generating economic growth that benefits all citizens equally.

In Mongolia GIZ is working in the following priority areas:

  • biodiversity
  • sustainable economic development
  • energy efficiency

The aim is to improve the economic environment and thus indirectly help reduce poverty.
